EDIT: the artifact does not prevent death, only resurrects him when it occurs.
Instead of him magically deciding that he could break the blood curse on his own, Im changing it to- During the storming of stormwind, a near by Archer Shot Joruder in his Chest, instantly killing him.
When Joruder awoke, the Artifact had cured the Blood curse from his body.
From there, he realized how corrupt the other orcs where, and eventually decided to head north, away from the war. He stumbled upon the Frostwolves, and decided to stay with them.
It's still a sucky explanation, but at least its better. Trial and error.
I cant think of anything better to explain how he broke free from arthas or how he was enslaved.
Since death is a requirement to become a deathknight, and artifact was able to cure the blood curse upon death, i think the mind control has to be removed. It wouldnt fit unless i said "Arthas's mind control was more powerful then the artifact", which seem like a crappy excuse to me.
Anyone have any ideas on how he could be enslaved and brake free?
Since death is a requirement to become a deathknight.

All you need to command light is undeniable faith in the light. So long as you believe in it, and believe your actions right, you can command light.
One of the four horsemen uses holy spells. He is a scourge deathknight, the exact opposite of a paladin your thinking of, and yet he uses holy spells.
