It's a piece of fictional literature. But that's all it is. Not even very well written, IMO. First of all, the KGB wasn't even founded until 1954. This story took place in the late 40's. So the "commander" couldn't possibly have been ex-KGB. Second, why would researchers be carrying loaded guns? Third, there were five test subjects. One was dead in the chamber. The second "bled out" as the result of a spleen injury while struggling with soldiers. The third died on the operating table immediately following anesthesia. But then after telling of the demise of the third, the author goes on to narrate the surgery of two more subjects. Where did this mysterious sixth test subject come from?
Blah. I hate it when writers can't keep their own stories straight. I'm guessing this isn't his day job.
